Patents

Cortex has filed over 250 composition-of-matter and broad use patents with 160 issued or allowed in the U.S. and offshore.  They include a combination of composition of matter patents, as well as broad use patents, based on the mechanism of action of AMPAKINE compounds, i.e., any compound that binds to the AMPA receptor and increases AMPA receptor modulation.  The mechanism-based patents cover uses such as improving memory and cognition, treating schizophrenia, age-related decline in libido, and up-regulating neurotrophic factors in the brain.

In 2007 alone, five new composition-of-matter patents for both high impact and low impact AMPAKINE compounds were filed which, if issued, will extend the technology’s patent life to 2028.  A new broad use patent was in-licensed from the University of Alberta, B.C..  This patent is for the use of AMPAKINE compounds to reverse or prevent respiratory depression caused by opiates, barbituates and other analgesia or sedative effects of these respective treatments.  This patent also covers the use of AMPAKINE compounds for the treatment of other breathing related disorders such as, central and obstructive apneas, spinal cord injury-related breathing issues, congenital hypoventilation syndrome, neonatal apnea, obesity hypoventilation syndrome, Rett syndrome, and reversal of respiratory depression associated with overdosing illicit narcotics and other abusive substances.  This patent, if issued, will provide protection for the use of AMPAKINE compounds until 2027.
